Barking Ladies

Sunday 8th February 2004

First Team

South East Combination League
Barking 0 Denham United 1
Barking slumped to another defeat which sees them slip rather dangerously towards the relegation zone. Barking Manager had to do without regulars LORNA ESTHERBY and ANGE ROBINSON as well as STACY SAVAGE who was on holiday. Work commitments also meant KELLY STOCK would only arrive at the half time interval.

On a bone hard pitch and facing a strong win in their faces first half, Barking were pleased with their first half efforts. On 18 minutes Barking put together a fine move involving LISA BRIVATI, HAYLEY UNWIN and BECKI GARNER, the end result saw BRIVATI with some space in the box but her finish went wide of the far post.

On 21 minutes KAREN STAPLES broke clear but her shot was blocked, the ball fell to BECKI GARNER but her drive was saved by the Denham keeper.

Denham had created a few breaks, but never really troubled Barking keeper MICHELLE BRIDGEMAN yet on 33 minutes the wind prevented Barking clearing, they worked the ball from right to left and got in behind the Barking defence and slotted the ball over the on-rushing BRIDGEMAN to put the away side ahead.

The remainder of the first half saw Barking happy to pack players behind the ball, and keep Denham away from their goal in the hope they could turn the defecit around in the second period.

Barking did come out of the blocks early in the second half, NICOLE MANNING chested a ball down and toe-poked her finish just past the post, VICKI STAPLES picked up the ball in her own half and went on an amazing sixty yard run, pust five Denham players, with only the keeper left, she placed the ball to her right hand dive, only to see the ball scrape the post and wide.

Denham did try to play their football and BRIDGEMAN had to be alert to make a smart save down to her right on 65 minutes.

However Denham were forced to defend in numbers at time and again KELLY STOCK was denied by a goal-line clearance after poking the ball under the Denham keeper, BECKI GARNER had a shot well saved, MANNING went close with a header.

As much as Barking huffed and puffed it looked like it wasn't going to be their day and that was how it turned out as Denham held out to take the points. Barking were guilty of not taking their chances but cannot be faulted for the effort they put in.

Barking playing into a fierce wind were much better in the second half and played some excellent football without testing the Brentwood Keeper.

Hertfordshire Girls League Cup - Group Stage
Barking 0 Tottenham Hotspur 5
Barking had already found Tottenham a difficult side to beat this season in friendlies and League matches as they possess a much bigger and more physical side. However Barking performed well in the first period and came close with strikes from ROSIE SWEENY and HAYLEY PIGGOTT. However the away side did take the lead on a break when they out powered and outpaced the home defence on 24 minutes. The second half saw Tottenham have the wind behind them and after an hour's play they took the game over as Barking started to tire having given everything up that point. Some fortunate deflections helped Tottenham but the goals rattled in during the last ten minutes and Tottenham took the points. TEAM: Holly Clary, Shaynece Rawlings, Emma King, April Patten, Katie Whitehead, Kayleigh Debenham, Joy Dutch, Alex Small, Danielle McAllister, Jayne Bentham, Hayley Piggott, Paris Jones, Charlotte Russell, Rosie Sweeny, Victoria Moorton

Hertfordshire Girls Group Stage
Barking B 2 S. Albans 0
Barking got home in this group match but had a very tough game against a resilant St Albans team. Barking took the lead three minutes before half time when GRACE SALE fired home from close range after a solo twenty yard run. Three minutes into the second half SALE grabbed her second with a neat finish from close range. However to say it was comfortable would be unfair to St Albans who had several efforts either blocked by good defending or saved by keeper MILLIE DEVEREUX. TEAM: Millie Devereux, Rosie Jacob, Cassie Roberts, Robyn Day, Adele Ambrose, Holly Griffin, Jodine Persechino, Sara Secco-Weider, Grace Sale, Aimee Evans
