Dewsbury Rangers Girls U12s 0 Battyeford 0

West Riding Girls League Under-12's Heavy Woollen Division

Having lost to Battyeford on the previous 2 meetings this season, Rangers put in a determined performance to ensure that it didn't happen again.

Rangers set off well and early chances went begging after strong midfield play from Rebecca Bastow and Rosie Mason.

The visitors slowly got into the game, but despite their territorial advantage for the rest of the first half, superb defensive play from Fay Broderick and Amy Dickinson kept the visitors at bay.

Battyeford's main striker, who must be the fastest player in the league, caused a few problems on the break but ever improving keeper Melissa Glover was alert in coming off her line to clear on a couple of occasions.

In the second half Rangers were the more dominant side. Poppy Wilkinson and Danielle Blakeley worked hard against strong opposition. Elissa Hill and Victoria Abbott were causing Battyeford no end of problems in attack but they were unable to make the breakthrough. A Broderick free kick sailed just wide and a claim for a penalty was turned down and, as the final whistle approached, player of the match Abbott was unlucky to see her shot on the turn go just the wrong side of the post.

Despite a goalless game this was a highly entertaining one played with superb spirit by two evenly matched sides on a pleasant spring evening. It also gave a measure how Rangers have improved as a team over the season with just one game remaining.

U12: Battyeford 1-2 Dewsbury Rangers

Dewsbury Rangers: Blanchard, Abbott
A good contest between two footballing sides began with Rangers pressing forward, but a quick break led to Battyeford scoring with a powerful shot, which, despite a fine effort from Danielle Archer, made it into the net. Rangers forced two fine saves from the home keeper, but she was beaten just before the interval by a fine first time shot from Nicole Blanchard. In the second half Rangers took control with defenders, Faye Shaw, Amy Vickers and debutante Jenna Jones in command, with midfielders Fay Broderick and Victoria Abbott creating problems with strikers Poppy Wilkinson and Chloe Ramsden pressurising the home defence. Broderick went closest when her long drive went inches wide before the pressure paid off when Abbott showed excellent footwork to make space and fire in a super drive. Rangers kept on top up to full time as Archer handled confidently and player of the match Vickers determined defending took the eye in a good all round team performance and a 2-1 victory.

Dewsbury Rangers U12 Girls

Under-12 gala queens
A week ago Rangers won the Hemsworth gala with a penalty shoot out victory against a strong Thornes side, winning four and drawing one match on the way to the final.

On Sunday at Howden Clough, Rangers won their opening game 1 - 0 against skilful 1st division champions Norristhorpe, Victoria Abbott netting.

In the next match Rangers started slowly and super finishing saw Brighouse deservedly take a 2 -0 lead: Rangers responded with an Abbott score and attacked non stop, but were unable to beat Brighouse's excellent keeper.

This set up a quarter final against Battyeford who scored a quick goal to lead at the interval; Rangers again came back as Nicole Blanchard scored to send the game into extra time. No further goals so the dreaded penalty shoot out took place with Danielle Archer pulling off three vital saves to see Rangers through to the semi final against Hebden Royd.

Both defences were on top with Amy Vickers and Chloe Ramsden in fine form. Again extra time was required but this time penalties were not, as Fay Broderick scored with a brilliant long range drive.

This set up a final against Brighouse and coach Jez Archer made sure there would not be a slow start this time as Rangers attacked from the off. After Poppy Wilkinson went close, a superb solo goal from Blanchard gave Rangers a lead they never looked like losing in a well organised display, with Jenna Jones doing a one on one marking role on Brighouse's prolific striker, to help see Rangers home to a 1-0 victory.

Well done to the whole squad who would like to thank new kit sponsor Duncan Stores Ltd of Chickenley.

Rangers Girls U12's Gala Victory

Rangers U12 Girls capped a fine season with an outstanding display to claim victory at Rangers' annual gala.

In the group stages Howden Clough were first up and were dispatched 2-0 with Amy Vickers in defence playing well. A similar scoreline saw Battyeford beaten as keeper Danielle Archer kept another clean sheet, as Rangers completed the group with a 100% record with victory over Brighouse 3-2.

The semi-finals brought Pudsey to face Rangers. Captain courageous, Victoria Abbott played through the pain barrier to lead her side to victory, but it was the one girl goal machine Nicole Blanchard who caught the eye with two goals and had no less then 5 other chances which Pudsey's stand in keeper saved superbly. Abbott drove home the third to give a half time 3-0 lead to give coach Jez Archer the luxury or resting Abbott and playing one short in the second half to hold on for victory.

The final brought Brighouse back as opponents. They found Blanchard in unstoppable form as her double strike gave a half time 2 - 0 lead. Straight from the kick off Fay Broderick shot and Blanchard swooped to knock home the rebound to effectively kill off the game. Archer brought off a fine save to keep out Brighouse and Broderick rounded off a great day for her and her team, to crash home the fourth just before the final whistle.

3 galas and 3 victories this summer, roll on next season when they move to under 13s.
