Billericay in fine tune in first round of League Cup

Billericay Town Ladies 5 - Beacon Hill Rovers 0
Essex County Womens League - League Challenge Cup First Round

Billericay Town Ladies progressed into the second round of the Essex League Challenge Cup on Sunday by beating Beacon Hill Rovers 5 - 0 at New Lodge. Billericay were in control for most of the game and played some neat, creative football.

It took the home team 2 minutes to get into their stride and produce their first effort on goal when Cheron Robinson intercepted a pass in midfield. Robinson then played a good pass to Ruth Bottomley, who picked out Tracy Childs unmarked for a shot on goal that was well saved by the Beacon goalkeeper.

The home team created some good moves down the left involving Claire Martin and the hardworking Linda Wiltsher. In the 20th minute Billericay scored a well deserved goal when Tracy Rodd took the ball down the right wing and found Bottomley unmarked on the edge of the box to send a fine looping shot over the keeper.

Eight minutes later Wiltsher swiftly went passed a couple of players on the left and shot the ball through the legs of the Beacon keeper and the advancing Wendy Palmer was at hand to tap the ball into the open net for Billericay's second goal.

Billericay kept up the pressure in the second half with some great moves and were unlucky with shots either just wide or well saved by the keeper. Billericay were awarded a free kick soon after the break. Rodd took the kick quickly and a good move involving Robins and Childs produced a good shot on goal which was pushed away from goal by the keeper, however Wiltsher found herself in the right place to knock in for her first goal for the club.

The home team made some substitutions with the hardworking Childs, Robins and Robinson being replaced by Kirsty Twain, Wendy Nicholls and Elaine Sykes.

Billericay kept up the momentum and Twain soon got involved in creating another good opportunity for Palmer who again had her shot well saved by the Beacon keeper.

Julie Willis playing in goal for Billericay had little to do all afternoon but was involved in the home teams fourth goal when a huge kick down field fell to Palmer who controlled the ball well, turned and curled a fine shot round the keeper for her second goal of the afternoon.

Billericay were awarded a corner in the 80th minute that Palmer swung in to the back post where she round Rachel Grayson unmarked to head home. Billericay will be hoping to keep their unbeaten run up next week when they have a tough game at nearby neighbours Chelmsford City at Barnston FC. This should provide an entertaining and exciting game. Kick off time 2pm.

Team: Willis, Rodd, Bardon, Martin, Robinson (Sykes), Bottomley, Robins (Nicholls), Wiltsher, Grayson, Childs (Twain), Palmer
