Ilkeston Girls Under 12's

Rainworth Welfare Tigers 0-1 Ilkeston Girls FC (Under 12's) 21 September 2003 After Rainworths comprenhensive 3-0 defeat of Hucknall Harriers the previous week, Ilkeston went into this fixture under no illusons that they would have things all their own way. Kicking down the slope Rainworth had the better of the early exchanges and hit the post inside the first 10 minutes. Some resolute defending by Ilkeston coupled with a fine save from Gemma Hutchings kept "The Tigers" at bay in what was proving to be a very competitive and close encounter. As things progressed Ilkeston had several forays into opposition territory and Joanne Priestley had two efforts that on another day might have given Ilkeston the lead. The half-time whistle sounded with Ilkeston finishing the stronger. The 2nd half brought the promise of better things to come - and so it proved. Inside 10 minutes of the re-start Ilkeston took the lead when a long ball found Joanne Priestley who from just inside the box dispatched the ball to the left of the Rainworth keeper and in off the post. The 1-0 advantage appeared to inspire Ilkeston onto better things and a fine run down the right and perfect cross from Laura Brooks found Hayley Manners who fired a fine goalbound shot low to the keepers right. The goal celebrations were prematurely halted as the keeper somehow got a touch onto the post and the ball was cleared to safety. The game continued to ebb and flow until the final whistle sounded with a sense of a job well done by the Ilkeston team. Full credit to all the girls for a good allround team display against a strong Rainworth side who will no doubt be amongst those sides challenging for honours at the end of the season. Player of the match : Hannah Godden The league match was followed by a friendly which gave all girls from both squads a good runout. Goals from Jessica Fallows (2) and Natasha Stevenson (1) gave Ilkeston a well deserved 3-0 victory. Next week Ilkeston Girls are away to Bingham Town FC.
