Reading Too Strong For U's

Colchester Utd Centre Of Excellence Under 16's 1 Reading U16's 3 The Under 16 Centre of Excellence team suffered a disappointing loss at the weekend, eventually losing out 3-1 to Reading after taking a 1-0 lead early in the first half. Colchester produced a Jekyll and Hyde performance against Reading on Saturday. For the first 25 minutes it appeared that the U's wouldn't have too much trouble coming home with 3 points. Kirsty Cammell was outstanding in midfield, together with Jo Chase, whose runs down the right wing were causing the Reading defence all kinds of problems. In the first 5 minutes there were chances at both ends, but Colchester then started to dominate and when they forced a corner on the right Kayleigh Morgan headed home from 6 yards. Colchester were now playing some lovely fluent football and minutes later Jo Chase put over a superb cross and Kate Birketts header looked as though it was going in the corner, but flashed just wide of the post. It was one way traffic for a while but Colchester couldn't get the all important 2nd goal. It all changed at the start of the 2nd period, gaps were appearing in the midfield and Reading played some nice football to come back into the game. In the 26th minute a Reading winger cut in from the left and scored with a low shot into the far corner of the net. They had further chances that thankfully weren't taken as Colchester were now on the back foot and having to defend continuously. Colchester had a couple of tame efforts themselves but weren't worrying the Reading back four. If the U's could have weathered the storm for the rest of the period they still would have had a chance to take the points, but that was not to be, and after 40 minutes an error at the back presented Reading with their second goal. Eight minutes later and it was 3-1 as Colchester again gave away a very soft goal. The next 15 minutes were much the same, with Reading taking control of midfield with some neat passing and causing the defence to sit deep. Colchester managed another couple of chances themselves, but this was Readings day and they finished 3-1 winners. This wasn't one of Colchester's better days, and apart from the first 25 minutes, there was only going to be one winner. It's Watford at home next week, and the girls will want to forget this performance and get back to winning ways.
