Billericay lose out in 2nd half
Essex County Cup Quarter Finals
Sunday 4th January
Final score: 3 - 1 to Redbridge Raiders
Billericay Town Ladies FC were unlucky on Sunday when they narrowly lost
against Redbridge Raiders in the quarter finals of the Essex County Cup away
at Barkingside 3–1. The game was a tightly contested match in which Raiders were favorite to win, however Billericay matched their opponents and in the first half were in control of most of the game.
Billericay started well and closed down Raiders quickly giving them little
space to play the ball around. The first chance of the afternoon fell to Raiders in the 5th minute but Jane Shepherd, outstanding in defence for Billericay, made a timely goal line clearance. The home team came close again a minute later but for fine work by Julie Willis in goal for Town, as she bravely came out to punch a floating cross away from a Raiders players head. In the 8th minute Billericay created their first chance on goal. Maria Boyce won the ball well in defence and laid a good pass to Lisa Robins, who then passed to Elaine Sykes, who found Wendy Palmer in space. Just as Palmer was about to shoot a Raider defender slid in to put the ball out of play.
Robins was unlucky half way through the first half when she turned a
defender well outside the box only to see her shot fly just wide of the
post. One minute later Billericay scored. Sykes battled well in midfield and forced a Raiders player to play a high ball back to her keeper, Palmer was at hand as the keeper was unable to reach the ball to slot home from close
In the second half the home team started the stronger and the Billericay
defence of Shepherd, Tracey Rodd and Claire Martin played outstanding. Linda Wiltshir replaced the hardworking Palmer in the 60th minute and
quickly became involved in some good moves for Town. However Raiders were awarded a lucky free kick in the 62nd minute and the
ball was curled round the wall into the bottom right hand corner of the goal
to make the score 1–1. Billericay were always on the back foot from this moment, and two subsequent
outstanding quick goals for the home team gave them a 3–1 lead. Billericay gave a debut to Kimberley Pye in the 70th minute, hoping to
chance the game. Billericay did not give up and continued to battle but unfortunately could
not get the goals they deserved for all their hard work.
Billericay play their first home Essex County league game of 2004 on the
11th January when they take on Stifford Clays at New Lodge, Billericay, kick
off time 2pm.
