Chelmsford City

Match reports for Chelmsford City teams.

First Team

Essex County Womens League Division One Basildon United 4-9 Chelmsford City
Chelmsford took an early lead through a well worked opening by Emma Ridings who unselfishly laid off the ball for Paula Drane to open the scoring with her 400th First Team goal in City colours. Within minutes Basildon found themselves level through some very sloppy defending by Chelmsford. City went ahead again when Paula Drane latched onto a long ball played by Kerry Binks and slotted it past the oncoming keeper but once again, within minutes, Basildon were level through more bad defending by Chelmsford. Chelmsford then picked up the pace and forced a corner which resulted in Paula Drane volleying the ball sweetly in to the back of the net to give City the lead. A sustained bout of pressure by Chelmsford resulted in two own goals from Basildon. After only 25 minutes played and seven goals scored, it was obvious this was going to be a very open game. This was shown when Basildon worked a good opening for their striker to score an unstoppable goal from the edge of the eighteen yard area. However this did not deter City who battled on and produced a well taken goal by Paula Drane to finish the first half leading 6-3. The second half started well for Basildon with the award of a penalty kick for a reckless challenge but fortunately for City, the Basildon player saw her penalty sail over the bar but minutes later Basildon were gifted a goal by an error from the City keeper. Two further goals for City, scored by Shirley Cole and Sharon Brownlie, put the game beyond Basildon. Chelmsford did however finish the game as they started, with a great piece of individual skill by Emma Ridings who rounded two players before slotting the ball past the Basildon keeper for the ninth and final goal of the game. This Sunday, Chelmsford entertain East Thurrock Utd at Barnston FC, High Easter Road, Barnston kick off 2pm.

Reserves

Division Two Harlow Frontiers 0-6 Chelmsford City Reserves
City’s second team returned to winning ways on Sunday, defeating an improving Harlow side whose early determination resulted in a goalless opening half hour. City were unable to settle but eventually top scorer, Angela McPhee broke the deadlock with two further goals from her hard working co-striker, Helen Alder gave City the cushion they needed to make three half time substitutions. The second half was almost entirely City pressurising with Emma Roberts continuing to cause problems on the right flank and debutant Shelley Haslam impressively linking defence and attack. It was these two players who added a goal apiece as City threatened to run riot. However, Harlow continued to battle and forced a diving fingertip save from City’s keeper, Ruth Smith before popular captain, Rachel Brett rounded off the scoring with a long range effort. After several intense matches it was nice to see City once again playing uninhibited football and looking like they were enjoying themselves.

U12's

A close encounter between two talented Chelmsford teams saw some friendly rivalry, and an eventual two goal draw. Quality end-to-end football was played to begin with, but both goalkeepers refused to be beaten. Both City sides had many chances before an U12 player was brought down in the area, resulting in a penalty for the younger team. However, the spot-kick was weak, and Amber Thomson had no trouble with the save. The first half continued in much the same way, and despite another penalty for the U12 side, it ended goal less. But after the half-time interval, both teams seemed more fired-up and determined, which resulted in some impressive football from both Chelmsford sides. It was, however, the U14’s who opened the scoring, Emma Sharpe beating the keeper with a simple right-footer. However, the younger City team fought back, equalising with a controversial goal, but nevertheless, the goal stood. The U12’s team now had reams of confidence, and with the U14’s lacking this, the younger side were allowed to take the lead. But the older players were determined not to be beaten, and in the last few minutes of play their determination paid off with a goal from Ashleigh Harding.
