Republica International v YORK CITY RESERVES

30th November 2004 The Reserves travelled to Leeds for this Yorkshire Cup second round match and on a sloping wind swept pitch started the better of the two sides. York took the lead on 15 minutes when Hannah Dalgleish controlled the ball well and finished with a good shot to beat the Republica keeper. York continued to have the better of the play but the home side began to fight back and it was Republica who equalised from the penalty spot after the referee awarded a penalty for a foul inside the area. This seemed to spur the York lasses on and 5 minutes later a cracking volley from Nic Whelan left the keeper stranded to put York 2-1 up.
The second half turned into a battling end to end cup tie as the home side pushed players forward looking for the equaliser and York breaking away to try and increase their lead. It was Republica who had the better of the opening 15 minutes as they scored 2 goals in quick succession to lead 3-2. York battled away and Hannah Dalgleish made the score 3-3 before the home side rallied to take the lead again at 4-3. Still the York lasses battled and again it was Hannah Dalgleish who finished of some excellent team work to level the score at 4-4. The crucial goal came 5 minutes from the end when a hanging ball from a corner kick was headed home to make the score 5-4. Although York battled right up to the final whistle, with chances from Nic Whelan and Player of the Match Hannah Dalgleish going inches wide, it was not to be.
A brave battling performance from both teams and played in the best spirit of football.

KIRKLEES v Republica

With icy conditions it was feared that the game wouldn't go ahead but the pitch had defrosted by 2pm and the referee had the final say that the match would go ahead. Starting with Char in goal, Lisa, Dawn, Nic and Becky in defence, Kat, Sarah, Debs and Katy in the middle and Simone and Barbie up front. Nikki and Amy were on the bench. It was a miserable first half for the greens as Republica scored 5 times with no answer from Kirklees. The main problem was the massive forward for Republica, apparently a recent signing from Leeds and ex-England international. Nice. Katy did score on her debut but this was ruled out for offside. The second half was slightly better with Kirklees cutting out the sloppy mistakes. Kat scored a great goal to put a nicer ring to the scoreline (it finished 9-1 but in fairness Katy had a perfectly good goal ruled out so technically it was 9-2). Sarah received the player of the match award Next up is Sheffield away.
