Romulus v Telford United Ladies

30th November 2003 Telford Ladies travelled to Birmingham to take on Romulus on Sunday 30th November. They ran away with a conclusive 2-6 victory after playing the kind of attacking football they have been threatening all season. The day belonged to six goal heroine Kerry Walker, who was composed in front of goal in her most impressive game this season. Her finishing was superb, from a 20 yard screamer to a clever jink around the home keeper to walk the ball home, she was on fire. Skipper Lisa Jackson and winger Steph Walker were the creative force behind the team. Jackson’s impressive defence splitting passes a key factor in the dominance of this game. The defence looked solid but for two slips which let Romulus score both of their goals at the back post. The home goals were never going to be of any consequence as there was never any doubt that the confident and determined Telford were going to win the game! Praise must be given to the whole team, not just for the hard work and the win, but also for their maturity in walking away from confrontation. The game had threatened to descend into a brawl when the frustrated Romulus players responded to an innocuous Karen Hackley challenge by throwing punches! Telford let their football do the talking and left with all three points in the bag!! ROMULUS 2 – TELFORD 6

Telford Ladies v Romulus

Sunday 14th March
Telford entertained Romulus at Idsall School on Sunday 14th of March and the team rooted to the bottom of the league table put in a fine battling performance to make a mockery of their current plight. Telford’s superior passing and movement always made them favourites for a win, but Division One beware, Romulus aren’t a bad side! Telford set out their intent from as early as the first minute of the game, Steph Walker crossing an inch perfect ball to Lindsay Brown, who saw her shot saved by the ‘keeper’s legs. Brown was in on the action again within a minute, heading a great Vicky Harper free kick over the bar following a cynical foul on S. Walker. Karen Hackley, skipper in the absence of Lisa Jackson, was next to force a fine save from the Rom’s keeper after the lightning pace of K. Walker had beaten the defence and set her up. Much of the first 30 minutes was played in the Romulus half of the field, but the visitors worked hard, making progress through a series of throw ins, winning a free kick from which Martin had to make a great save. At the other end Hackley saw Martin’s opposite number save a powerful 20 yard shot, which had looked to be a certain goal. Telford took the lead when a Lou Hickman throw in was collected by Stacey Aitken Best, who floated a perfect ball over the top for K .Walker, the No.7 made a superb solo run, slipping the defence before slotting the ball home. 1-0. Wave after wave of Telford attacks followed their lead, Aitken Best saw her low shot go wide before she received a pin point cross from S.Walker, laid the ball off to Nicky Mason, who saw her shot well held by the keeper. A foul on K. Walker 30 yards out saw Hackley go for goal but her free kick rebounded off The Rom’s well placed wall. Telford’s second goal wasn’t long in coming, courtesy of a terrific K. Hackley run; she eluded the attentions of the No.3, Smith to hit a sweet angled shot into the roof of the net. 2-0. Telford’s top striker Walker saw another goal disallowed for offside before Sam Rodway nutmegged the midfielder, putting the striker free again through the centre; the keeper got a slight touch as Walker's lofted shot flew into the back of the net. 3-0. Romulus got a goal back before half time when Hayley Wootton, probably their best player, skipped a Harper challenge to push her shot past Martin to make it 3-1. Aitken Best almost immediately pulled one back for the home side, but the keeper was alert and cleared the danger. Romulus made a bright start to the second half, winning numerous throw-ins again. Any advantage they might have gained was blocked every time by a towering performance from diminutive Lou Hickman, her winning battle with tricky Hayley Wootton being a highlight of the game. K. Walker should have made it four for Telford when she swerved a shot wide with the goal gaping, and S. Walker was unlucky not to score when after a great break on the right she was denied by a spectacular double save by Cottingham. The Roms did have a purple patch halfway through the half, keeping Harper and Cuthbert busy at the back, Harper cleared of the line after Martin had committed herself to a save but lost the ball. Play quickly switched back to the other end, Hackley making a superb midfield tackle to set K. Walker free on the left, the striker unleashed a fierce shot over the bar from the edge of the area. Romulus battled to the end, their defender making a perfectly timed challenge on K. Walker in the box when a good Harper corner had set her up in a scoring position. The striker did carve out the last chance of the game though when she hit another shot just wide at the bottom of the far post! A great win for Telford and a welcome three points.
