In order to prepare for the tournament, Canada head coach Bev Priestman is holding a pre-tournament camp, giving North-American based players, who are currently out of season, an opportunity to shake off the rust.

“It’s a massive year,” Priestman said Wednesday. “I think even watching the men’s World Cup — the following and all the support that was given to that team — I’m super excited. It got me energized and ready to go again for this year.

UK Athletics has announced that it wants to ban transgender women from female events on fairness grounds – but claims it can’t do so unless the government changes the law.

UKA’s new transgender position, released on Friday, indicates that it wants to go down a similar path to British Triathlon, the Rugby Football Union and Rugby Football League, who have all sought to protect the female sport category on fairness and/or safety grounds.

Arsenal manager Jonas Eidevall says the club's recruitment needs to be "better" after they had two world-record bids rejected for Manchester United and England striker Alessia Russo.

United turned down an offer of almost £500,000 from Arsenal for the 23-year-old on transfer deadline day.

"Last summer we got one player too little, now we have done that again here in January," said Eidevall.

"I'm disappointed. Over time these things have a big impact."

Jonas Eidevall has said Arsenal will have to have a look at their recruitment strategy after ending a second successive transfer window a player short of what he had wanted.

“I think recruitment is key if you’re going to be a successful team,” the manager said before Sunday’s game at West Ham. “Last summer we got one player too little, and we did that again in January. So obviously there are things we need to look at in order to be better because over time these things have a big impact on how we perform and the ambitions we have.”

Willie Kirk pauses for thought when asked how his first three months as Leicester City Women manager have gone.

"I've loved it from the first minute… but if it had been purely left up to me, I'd have not taken the job."

It is a frank assessment from the Scot, who stepped in to replace Lydia Bedford at the helm at the start of November. He was four months into a role as the club's first director of football, having been sacked by Everton the previous October.
