ACL injuries often take around six to nine months to make a full recovery after reconstruction. But in some cases, players face a year-long wait before they can return to their sport.

Scotland midfielder Caroline Weir last week became the latest player to suffer the injury, sparking renewed calls from players, fans and managers for more research into why this type of injury is more prevalent in female footballers than male.

Arsenal may not be winning on the pitch but they’re winning off it. The Gunners broke the WSL attendance record for a third time with the 54,115 fans at the Emirates Stadium for their 1-0 defeat to Liverpool on Sunday. Arsenal are mastering the art of bringing the supporter base on board with watching the women’s team; the marketing and ticketing teams deserve a huge amount of credit for the numbers coming through the turnstiles. Meanwhile across London, Chelsea could only muster 14,776 for their 2-1 victory over Tottenham. It is staggering that the reigning champions, bidding for a fifth consecutive league title and with a squad stacked with international superstars, cannot get fans to show out in force. Ticket prices rising, with some as high as £50, and the later Sunday kick-off may have impacted numbers. However, there is more to do to build crowds worthy of Emma Hayes’ side. Suzanne Wrack

Manchester United manager Marc Skinner says he was surprised by the strength of his side's performance in their opening day Women's Super League victory over Aston Villa, despite needing a last-gasp winner to seal a comeback.

The Red Devils were 1-0 down with 14 minutes to go at Villa Park but eventually came away with a 2-1 win after Lucia Garcia and Rachel Williams scored following Rachel Daly's shock opener for the hosts.

Having added a plethora of new faces to his United squad this summer, including four signings on transfer deadline day, Skinner faced question marks over how quickly they would settle into the side, especially given the quality of their opening-day opponents.

Villa, who were down to 10 players after Kirsty Hanson's sending off in the second half, were their usual resilient selves and made clear that they could be capable of disrupting the traditional top four this season.

Wales remain without a win at the UEFA Women's Nations League after Denmark gained a 5-1 victory at Cardiff City Stadium.

It comes after a 1-0 defeat for Wales away to Iceland in their opening game of the campaign last Friday.

A poor start for Wales meant that they were already behind just five minutes into the match. Rhiannon Roberts was penalised after taking out Amalie Vangsgaard, with a penalty to Denmark.

Police have confirmed they are not treating the death of Sheffield United player Maddy Cusack as suspicious.
