The USL Super League project got under way in 2021, at which time it was announced as a Division II women’s soccer league launching in 2023. However, last Tuesday the league suddenly announced it was to apply for Division I sanctioning instead. It now plans to launch next year.

Should its Division I status be awarded, the USL Super League plans to commence in August 2024. From there it will mirror its schedule with that of European and international competition, playing from August to June with a winter break.

The 29-year-old is Chelsea's leading women's goalscorer, having scored 110 times in 175 appearances.

Kirby, who joined the club from Reading in 2015, signed a two-year deal in 2021 with the option of a further 12 months.

She said at the start of May that she would miss the World Cup with a knee injury sustained in February during a League Cup semi-final against West Ham.

It is a moment that comes rarely for defenders so when Eriksson poked in Sam Kerr's header for Chelsea's second goal shortly before half-time, she opened her arms and ran towards the stands, welcoming a roar of adoration from the Blues faithful at Kingsmeadow.

"I love you guys," Eriksson said to them afterwards as she, alongside partner and forward Pernille Harder, were honoured in a presentation.

The 29-year-old has made 184 appearances since joining from Linkopings in 2017 and has been a key figure in the driving force behind Chelsea's three successive WSL titles.

Catarina Macario says she won’t be ready in time to play for the United States in this year’s Women’s World Cup as she recovers from an ACL injury.

“The desire to return to play for my club and country has driven my training and fueled my everyday life. However, what’s most important right now is my health and getting fit and ready for my next club season,” Macario wrote on Tuesday on Twitter.

While the Lionesses will be fully funded by the FA to travel to the tournament being held in Australia and New Zealand, it was a different story for the England Deaf Women's Football Team.

They had to raise £50,000 by the end of June in order for them to attend the World Cup in Malaysia.

They had to set up aGoFundMe organised by Simon Harris, a social media manager from Essex, for expenses including hotel deposits, to secure rooms for the event in September.
