Kettering Weetabix Youth League

Report on matches played Saturday 4th and Sunday 5th October 2003. Ken Burton League Cup – Round 1: Under-11, Under-13, Under-15. League matches: Under-13

Ken Burton League Cup – Round 1

City Colts A 1 Peterborough United 3
These 2 sides shared the spoils in last week’s League meeting and this was another exciting and enjoyable game. Posh had the better of the 1st half, taking a 2-0 lead thanks to Zoë Watkiss midway through, and Shay Stanford. City hit back, a fine passing move allowing Katy White to reduce the arrears but, despite hitting the woodwork, they couldn’t break through again, and an own goal following a Stanford corner ensured United went through.
Corby Cougars Inter 13 Kettering United 0
League leaders Inter comfortably beat United for the 2nd time this season. But the visitors, for whom ‘keeper Amber Powell made some good saves and Lauren Cooper impressed on her debut, did create a number of chances, but were unable to make them count. For Inter, a double hat-trick came from Mickaela Gillon, Katie Hay hit a hat-trick, Alex Hindwood netted twice and there were singles for Georgis McEachran and Rebecca Martin.
Irchester Romans 5 Brixworth Juniors 2
Romans, odd goal winners over Brixworth in the League, ensured Cup progress with a lively start. Lisa Nolan gave them an early lead and excellent goals by Charlotte Fulham and Chloe Morgan, who scored twice, gave them a 4-0 advantage. Brixworth hit back with goals by Charlotte Reed (who later suffered a suspected broken leg) and Hannah Richards, but Romans finished the stronger - Danielle Lishman grabbing their 5th.
Sunnyside Warriors 0 Kingsthorpe Pumas 8
After a convincing League victory earlier this season, Pumas were made to work harder this time, Warriors keeper Kitty Hitchcock making some good saves, Vicky and Alyesha Hale playing well in defence and front runners Demi Giles and Jodie Harwood causing the visitors defence some problems. Pumas were only 2 ahead at the interval and only found things easier when Warriors tired later on. Charlotte Burrows was the main scorer with a hat-trick, Adel Lumb netted twice, with the others coming from Lauren Handley, Jasmine Clarke and Laura Smith with a penalty.
Under-13 7-a-side
Ise Lodge 1 Corby Ravens 1 (1-2 on penalties)
Ravens, 3-1 winners at Ise earlier in the season, took advantage of the conditions to have more of the play in the 1st half, forcing several saves from Laura Kitching. Debutant Anya Sawinski was performing well in defence and Ise looked dangerous on the break, Holly Elder shooting just wide. Ise had the better of the 2nd period and it was against the run of play that Kirsty Crawford gave Ravens the lead. The Ise reply was almost instantaneous, a good build up seeing Georgina Roberts slot home from outside the box, following a cross by Natasha Zajac. Ise couldn’t grab the winner and an even period of extra time brought no further goals, despite chances at both ends. It was Ravens who edged the shoot out, despite the heroics of Kitching, who made 2 magnificent saves and also converted a spot kick.
Under-13 11-a-side
Brixworth Juniors 10 Duston Knights 1
League leaders Brixworth made a positive start, but a hardworking Duston side did well to restrict them to a 4-0 half time score line. Juniors gained control after the break as they upped the tempo and there were doubles for Kim Farrow, Alice Beckley, Mikaela Welford and Sarah Pestell, with Chloe Huntley and Megan Legg also on target.
Corby Cougars Ajax 2 Rushden Rangers 7
Rangers made a strong start and had missed a number of chances before Becky Kelly converted Amy Barnes’ through ball in the 13th minute. The lead was doubled 3 minutes later, Katherine Gaunt tapping home a long throw. Becky Yates ended a fine move with the 3rd just before halftime, but Ajax reduced the deficit soon after the turnaround through Shauna Brierley. Kelly then rammed home her 2nd, but Ajax kept pushing forward and was rewarded with a goal by Rebecca Boath. However, Rushden finished on top, Yates netting almost immediately, a Kelly cross being turned in by a defender and Yates completing her hat-trick in the last minute. Rangers were also indebted to makeshift defender Kayleigh Malins, who was outstanding.
Corby Cougars Roma 3 Moulton Magpies 2 (aet)
This game turned out to be a superb advert for girls football, played at a fast pace by 2 committed sides. Despite pressing early, Roma found themselves a goal down when Jade Jacquest netted following a corner. Good build up saw Nicole Tinto race clear and beat Moulton’s impressive keeper, Kate Markham. Jacquest converted another corner to give Moulton a halftime lead, but, after the interval, Roma pressed and were rewarded with a penalty, converted by Tinto after she was brought down. Both sides searched for the winner, but the game went into extra time and, in the final minute, a superb build up gave Tinto the chance to complete her hat-trick for a magnificent winner.
Cambridge City 14 Drayton Grange 0
A powerful 2nd half performance gave the 1st Division side a comfortable win over their 2nd Division opponents. They led 4-0 at the interval, all 4 courtesy of Becky Hewson, but ran riot after the break, with doubles by Shona Kelly, Hewson, Jordan Holland and Tracey Carter, with Sarah Heneker and Jodie Tucker adding the others.
Flitwick Eagles 3 Kettering Town 8
An under strength Town side shared 6 1st half goals with their 2nd Division hosts before easing through after the break. Emma Wright hit a hat-trick, Racheal Cooper notched a double and there were singles for Charlotte Taylor, Kylie Evans and Melisa Thomas. Eagles replied through Stacie Lockey, with a double, and Beth Hedges.
Kingsthorpe Blackcats 6 Brixworth Juniors 0
1st Division triumphed over 2nd in a game that had action at both ends, with Blackcats superior finishing standing them in good stead, the Brixworth attacks stifled by some strong tackling. After playing in goal last week, Sophie Wright returned to her attacker’s role to notch a hat-trick, with Lucy Bateman netting twice and Emily Behan once, with debutant Laura Chambers having an impressive game in midfield.
Peterborough United 15 Priory Parkside 0
Priory struggled to get to grips with the Posh attack throughout, but played with a great deal of enthusiasm and never gave up. The outstanding Megan Bonner opened the scoring after 2 minutes and went on to add 3 more, substitute Amy Rickards also hit 4, Julie Ikeda grabbed a hat-trick and provided the cross for Carla Hovell to net, Ashley Palmer netted twice, 1 from the penalty spot, with the goal of the game, a 20 yard cracker from Stephanie Pepper completing the scoring.

Under-13 – 7-a-side - Blue Division
Olney Town 0 Kingsthorpe Jaguars 4
Jaguars moved to the top of the League with their 4th successive win. A goal-less 1st half was fairly evenly contested, but they took advantage of a couple of defensive errors to go ahead after the interval. Though Olney created a number of chances, they were unable to convert them and went down to goals from Kathryn Sturman, Stephanie Parker, Jade Robinson and Rachel Duffy.
Under-13 – 7-a-side - Yellow Division
Kettering United 4 Kettering Orchard Park 0
This top of the table battle saw United go clear as Park’s 100% record went, despite an impressive performance by Alisha Elfden. Siana Adams opened the scoring, Maisie Brudenall adding the 2nd before the interval. The 2nd half saw Adams notch her 2nd before the outstanding Imogen Cox slotted the 4th.
